This is part of a growing movement to save money on erectile dysfunction medications. More than half a million men worldwide are seeking medical treatment for ED, the most common cause of ED, said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Sexual Medicine and Reproductive Sciences at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.
The Food and Drug Administration has granted approval to the first of several new medications to treat erectile dysfunction. This medication, called sildenafil, is the first of several new drugs approved by the FDA to treat ED, including the drug’s FDA-approved medication, Viagra.
“This is a major step in improving the lives of men suffering from this problem and to bring them a better quality of life,” Wolfe said.
Viagra, which has been available since 1998, was one of many new ED medications in the United States in 2006, including Viagra Connect. It was the first of many new ED medications to be approved by the FDA to treat impotence, a condition in which men are unable to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
The drug has already been shown to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction in more than 100,000 men, but the drug’s effect in treating ED is limited to men who have previously experienced an erection, according to a 2006 study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. In addition, sildenafil has been found to be effective in treating impotence in men who have not responded to other ED medications, such as Viagra.
A clinical trial conducted by Pfizer Inc., a biotechnology company, found that men who took Viagra had a significantly greater time to achieve and maintain an erection than men who did not take the drug. In fact, men who took Viagra had less time to orgasm in a half-hour than men who did not take the drug.
The researchers also found that men who took sildenafil had a significantly greater time to achieve and maintain an erection, compared with men who did not take the drug. The results were the same regardless of the dosage, time or dose of sildenafil.
Viagra, the first of its kind, is the only erectile dysfunction drug to be approved by the FDA. The drug’s label recommends that men take one tablet of Viagra within four hours of taking an erectile dysfunction drug, which is the recommended starting dose for most men. Viagra is available only to doctors who are licensed by the FDA or who have prescribed it to patients.
